About Southern New Hampshire University
Initially, Southern New Hampshire University’s focus was to train bookkeepers. The private university opened as the New Hampshire Accounting and Secretarial School in 1930. Students were able to attend school on Monday evenings, allowing them to work during the day. The school also allowed students to pay tuition in installments so that cost was not a deterrent to attendance. The name of the school was changed to the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Finance in 1936.
Soldiers returning from service in World War II swelled enrollment significantly. Most were searching for typing and clerical skills in order to obtain employment. The school began offering courses on the Manchester military base which added a military secretarial studies program. The school was the first to offer such a program in the United States. A vocational program was established in 1944 to assist disabled soldiers who were unable to work at jobs they held prior to the war due to injuries they sustained in battle.
Another name change occurred in 1948 when the school became known as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Commerce. The school continued to market to veterans with classes held in the evening since veterans tended to be older than the average college student. This meant they had work, family, and social obligations that made it difficult for them to attend traditional classes. In 1958, the school became the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce and, in 1969, became New Hampshire College. The school moved to a new campus in 1971 and online education was established in 1995 This led to rapid growth in enrollment. In 2001, the school gained university status and was renamed Southern New Hampshire University.
