About Drexel University
Drexel University was founded by Anthony J. Drexel, a financier and philanthropist, in 1891. He wanted to create a university that would address a growing industrial society, providing education for young men and women. Initially, the school was known as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry, but did not offer degrees. It was in 1914 when various departments were combined and bachelor of science degrees were issued. Drexel was one of the first schools to offer a cooperative education program when it was created in 1919.
Drexel donated more than $3 million of his own money, the largest gift in the history of the university. The building where his new school opened is still used by the university today. From the beginning, the school had no restrictions on race, religion, gender or economic status unlike other institutes of higher learning at the time.
The school began offering master’s degrees in 1927 and, in 1936, the school was renamed Drexel Institute of Technology. After the school was granted the privilege of awarding doctorate degrees in 1970, the school became Drexel University.
Today, there are 24,190 students enrolled at Drexel University. One year after graduation, Drexel graduates report earnings of over 14 percent above the national average, and ten years after graduation, their earnings are as much as $17,852 higher than graduates of comparable institutions.
